Allergy?

by quillswriting, Jul 25, 2007 12:00AM
Since April I have been experiencing constant sinus tachycardia and high bp, before that I was feeling ill but did not know what was wrong with me.  I have a swelling in one side of my throat and a swollen tonsil, had it swabbed and there was no infection.  My throat is also red and irritated looking.  When I had a cold I had some severe breathing trouble like there was an obstruction in my throat.  When the cold went away I have had chronic sinusitis since.  My sinuses are always blocked.  I have to clear my throat a lot.  I get clear gel like mucous when I cough.  I am not breathing adequately and I think it is the cause of the tachy.  I also have blue fingernails and unequal pupils, but they do react to light.  Had many blood tests done and all are normal.  Including thyroids, pth, hormone levels, blood cultures, blood gas, blood count, serum levels, urea and electrolytes, you name it, i've had the test.  Just had autoimmune screen including ANA, ESR, ACE etc... all normal.

Can chronic airbourne allergy cause throat swelling, redness, tachycardia and high bp?  Would it be safe to try an antihistamine while on beta blockers?

The 'constant sinus tachycardia and high bp' are probably unrelated to your nasal and sinus symptoms.  Each of these should be confirmed with serial blood pressure measurements and 24 to 72 hour cardiac monitoring.  If confirmed, you will need a careful cardiovascular evaluation.  'Blue fingernails' is a rare finding and, when actually present, a sign of significant cardiac or pulmonary disease.  This is all the more reason to have your tachycardia and hypertension evaluated by a cardiologist.

You may indeed just have residual sinusitis in which case you may require the use of one or more of the following:  nasal irrigations or washes, inhaled nasal steroids, an antibiotic and/or a decongestant.  You may need a CT scan of your sinuses to determine if a procedure to facilitate drainage is required.

Unequal pupils can be congenital or acquired.  If acquired, and persistent, you will need a careful examination by an eye specialist.  This may or may not be a benign condition and should not be ignored.
