Am I a carrier for strep throat.

by Venomcheese24, Jul 26, 2007 12:00AM
I ahve been with my girlfriend for 6 months and in that whole time she has got strep 4 times. I havent felt any syptoms (symptoms) of it and i got a throat culture about a month ago. My test came back negative for strep and i was wondering if it could be in my blood or something like that?

Recurrent strep throat is common in children 5 to 15 years old and some of these may be asymptomatic carriers of the infection.  However it is uncommon in adolescents and adults.  If your girl friend's strep throat infections have been documented by culture, she or someone close to her, such as you, her immediate family, or if she is a teacher, her students, must be re-infecting her.  She should discuss this with her doctor.  You should have another culture, as one culture may be falsely negative.  It may be necessary to treat the 2 of you at the same time, for an extended period of time, longer than the usual 7 to 10 days, or to treat a third party if that person is proven to be a carrier.  The other cause of recurrence is not taking the antibiotic as directed, for the full course prescribed.
