Elevated IgG

Elevated IgG

My daughter (10) had loose stools and was tested for celiac disease.  She had a slightly elevated IgG.  This blood panel also revealed a recent case of mono.  I had my doctor test me for celiac, too (since it can be hereditary), and my test results revealed a very elevated IgG-- everything else on the celiac panel was in normal range.  What does an elevated IgG  in isolation mean?  Should I follow up with an allergist?  A GI doctor?  Thanks.

A mild elevation of immunoglobulin G (IgG) is not uncommon with mononucleosis.  An elevated IgG, in isolation, may be seen with certain infectious diseases but is of itself, not diagnostically significant or useful.  You should ask your doctor for his/her interpretation of your elevated IgG, in the context of your general health and any specific health problems you may have.  In general, disease-specific antibodies to IgG are of value in a variety of infectious diseases.

Your best bet, however, would be to consult with an allergist/immunologist and not with a GI doctor since your history and your tests for celiac disease seem to be negative.
