Sea weed allergy

Sea weed allergy

We were on vacation last year in Myrtle Beach, SC and after about 4 days our 25 year old daughter developed a rash only on her shins. There was sea weed and sea oats on the beach where she was laying out.( strange since she was in the ocean everyday) Our family doctor said it was an allergic reaction, we treated it with Cotisone 10. Unfotunately he is no longer practicing, and the new physician said it would be $150.00-$200.00 for an allergy shot( she has no insurance). Are there any other alternatives to try to prevent it this year? We leave in 3 weeks.

There are alternatives to an expensive injection.  These include pre-medication with an over the counter non-sedating antihistamine.  Another option is the use of oral prednisone begun, either preventively 1 day before the anticipated exposure and continued daily for no more than a week, or preferably begun at the first sign of an allergic reaction.  You should also be sure that your daughter is not taking any antibiotic on a regular or semi-regular basis, as some antibiotics can result in a sun-sensitivity rash.
