baby with allergies??

by tamtam11, Jun 04, 2009 02:40PM
I have a 11 month old who for the past week has woken up to fluid in her eye lids. She does not have any gunk or leaking any fluid from her eyes. They are really swollen though, she does not sneeze or seem to have any other systems of allergies but yet the doctors (2 different ones) seem to think its allergies and told me to give her benadryl. The benadryl just makes her so sleepy so she doesn nothing. She has a dirty diaper every couple of hours aswell which is not normal for her. Is this allergies?? if so is there any other treatment for her?? I've never heard of a 11 month old having enviromental allergies before.

Eleven month olds can respond to environmental allergens but an allergic response limited to the eyelids would, while possible, be rather unusual.  There are a number of other causes, infectious and mechanical for example, of eyelid swelling.  The best advice I can give you is to seek consultation with a Pediatric Ophthamologist (eye specialist), who should quickly be able to diagnose the problem.  Since the Benadryl doesn’t seem to be helping, you might want to ask the doctor who prescribed it if you could temporarily discontinue it, until your child is examined by the eye doctor.

Good luck
