parakeet dander

MY 20-month-old daughter has recently had pneumonia (as confirmed by chest X-ray) she was on antibiotics ect; when she went in for a re-check I was told it had cleared.  My mother-in-law has two small parakeets ay my home that are kept in our home office.  Are parakeets usually causes of allergies>

Parakeets can cause both allergic (hypesensitivity) and infectious pneumonia.  The infectious variety is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia psittaci, that parakeets can carry and transmit.  The disease of the lungs is called Psittacosis.  You should discuss this with your daughter’s doctor and to keep your daughter away from the birds.
