A question regarding inhalers

A question regarding inhalers

About a month ago I had a chest cold that turned into bronchitus (bronchitis).  Then I developed asthma.  Well I was diagnosed with mild asthma ten years ago.  It has never been that bad.  I have allergies to dust, cats, smoking, and pollen.  I got over my bronchitus (bronchitis) and the coughing was bad.  I was prescribed a Proair inahler the generic to Albuterol and some cough medicine.  It's hard to talk in full sentences without having to cough so much.   What has made it worse is going to my mother-in-laws house and taking care of her four cats.  She passed awat a month ago and my husband and I are taking care of the cats by going over there feeding them and cleaning until my sister-in-law moves in the house in Sept.  I don't go over there everyday but when I do the dust is so bad and the cats three of which are long hair bother me a lot.  The curtains that are in the windows are about thirty years old and have never been taken down to be washed.  I don't cough a lot when I am there it's after I leave that I will cough continuously.  I went and saw an Allergist a few days ago and he wants me to try Advair two puffs a day.  I don't feel like I need this evreyday because it's not everyday my asthma acts up, only when I go to the house.  I am happy using the ProAir but he told me it's more a rescue inhaler.   What if I decide to use just the ProAir, are there any effects of uising it.  What if I decide to do the Advair could I stop it whenever I want.  My doctor said no but I have read on the internet some people use it seasonal when there asthma is at it's worse.  I hate using medicine and I refuse allergy shots.  One reason is because I don't have insurance and it would be too costly.  The Dr. also gave me a nose spray Nasacort to use.  It didn't do anything for me.  Could my asthma get worse you think if I don't use the inhalers.  I just don't know what to do but I am tired of coughing and never being able to breath like I want..  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.  Btw I am new to this board.

Ask about a different inhaler ... advair is VERY expensive.  Here in Canada one inhaler (250/50) lasted me 2 weeks (60 inhalations and I was using 4 puffs a day) and the inhaler costs $120.

On the other hand my allergy shots are $140 per year and it will take 3 years to finish .....

There are many other drugs that are just the steroid or just a long acting brondiator (however you don't want to use it alone) that may work for you but are cheaper.  The steroid do take a couple weeks to really start working but help greatly (although my asthma is pretty much continuous).
