Any chance of growing out of asthma?

Is there any chance of growing out of asthma?
I have moderate/severe asthma since 3-4 months ago.  I'm 16 years old.

Thank you.

Yes, many teenagers develop asthma that completely disappears with adulthood. This does not, of course, mean for certain that this is your situation. Some people remain asthmatics for life. I would remain optimistic, however. Read the literature and try to avoid environments that tend to precipitate attacks.  Keep an albuterol "emergency inhaler" handy, and don't hesitate to use it.

Yes, and/or it can lessen in severity.  My 18hyr old grew into it at age 10 and now only gets it with illness.  Same holds true with my 16yr old who was first DX'd with asthma at the ER with a 106.2 temp, asthma and virus at age 18mos old!

Yes, I always carry my emergency inhaler with me.  My asthma is actually getting worse, so I don't know.

I know that when I have an illness (right now : pneumonia), I am wayy worse.  I tried going for a walk today, had to turn around a few minutes later, my chest hurt soo bad.  I have a hard time to work (today was not good at all).  I know I shouldn't have gone today, but I'm calling in sick tomorrow so I can rest or go to the hospital if it's not better.  Apparently my lungs are very bad right now, all filled up with mucus.  This is my 3rd pneumonia.  Had one 3-4 months ago (when I discovered asthma), and in grade 9.  So I am sure there is something wrong with this.

If you have a peak flow meter you can see how low your peak flow numbers go when you have a virus/bacteria in your lungs. For me I will drop fairly quick to 50% from my best peak flow and at that point intervention is definitely needed. And the recovery is long, a couple of weeks is needed just to get back to 80% of your best peak flow number. And this is how asthma is, especially when you have a lot of mucous in your lungs. All the mucous we produce blocks the airways quite a bit, even though the bronchial muscles having relaxed. And it takes some time to get rid of all that mucous and for the airways to heal themselves. You should be taking at least the next week off from work. I went back after a week and a half after my last infection and it was counter productive. I probably should have been off realistically two to three weeks. It's very difficult to work when you're not getting enough oxygen into your system.

And even after you are over the clinical symptoms of the pneumonia / asthma, you are very very tired and somewhat weak getting back into the swing of things.  I am so sorry you are going through this at your age and this most likely being the Summer where you live.

The Yog Pranayam (breathing exercises) will  help with asthma  problems.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after 1 minute.

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose. Duration upto 5 minutes.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Start with a few minutes, and increase your timing gradually.
Come back to report your progress on this post, after 2 weeks,10 weeks and 4 months. You will start to grow out of asthma after 4 months. This is a very gradual process, so be patient, and do the pranayam everyday and you will stay healthy.
