Asthma and ok meds to take

I have had asthma my whole life and I'm now 14 weeks pregnant.  My asthma has gotten so much worse the past few months and it's really concerning me about the meds I am taking and the baby.  I am on albuterol and flovent everyday.  I was also put on a 7- day prescription for prednisone.  My chest constantly feels tight and I am taking my inhalers so much just to try and control my breathing.  Does anyone have any advice on how they controlled their asthma during pregnancy and has anyone taken prednisone throughout the whole pregnancy?  Please help!

Hello, anc congratulations on being pregnant.

The hormonal changes of pregnancy frequently cause asthma to flare (some women have developed asthma during pregnancy).  I would recommend that you visit an allergist to get things under control.  Taking a bunch of meds while pregnant is not good for the baby, but low O2 because you can't breathe is a lot worse.  Thankfully most of the meds go directly to the lungs where they are used and very little (if any) gets into the general system wherre they can go to the baby.

An allergist may want to increase your maintenance medications, especially inhaled steroid level.  Allergy shots maybe something to consider as well.

Feel better and take care of that little one.
