Asthma and pregnancy

I have airborne allegies and asthma that is described as mild by my allergist (no wheezing, shortness of breath 1-2x/day). I recently found out I'm pregnant. I'm trying to determine the best treatment to control my asthma that has the least negative effect on my baby. I was taking Asmanex (category c for pregnancy) before I become pregnant, and switched to Pulmicort because it's category b. The pulmicort doesn't work as well as the Asmanex.

My ob/gyn suggests the pulmicort and isn't worried about the mild asthma affecting the baby. My allergist prefers asmanex because the studies that made it category c were done on animals in very large quantities. My pulminologist won't see me because I'm pregnant. I found a new pulmonologist, but can't get an appointment for a few weeks.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice.

Hi Meg:

I'm in same boat.  I've been getting my asthm meds from my PCP.  I haven't seen an allergist or pulmologist for some time.  So anyways my PCP tells me they won't write a script for pregnant women if it's not a category "A".  I have to get the script from OB...who I won't be seeing for quite sometime.

I don't take Asmanex, but I do take Advair which is category C as well.   I also take Singulair.  I was told in the past the asthma medicine is okay to take during pregnancy.  I was pregnant about 14 years ago and took a steroid inhaler and Uniphyl and had no issues with baby development and what not.   I'm still comfortable in believing asthma meds are safe, but like you I'm  concerned.

The only I can tell you is that my OB doc a couple of years ago said all asthma medicines are safe during pregnancy.   Be warned however, that hormones during pregnancy may improve your asthma, leave it the same or make it worse.
