Asthma or COPD

30 year Male/ active /175 pounds / African American

Recently I took a PFT for a Fire fighting Job.  I did not pass to their standards.   I have a childhood history of asthma, but really no asthma symptoms now.  The test from the Fire Department indicated that I have mild obstruction lung disease.  I am pretty worried about this diagnosis.

Do I have Asthma or COPD or Both?
If it is Asthma and I have not been treating it would these be typical results?

I took the PFT test over two times and the results of the second full PFT are the following (I had no brochodilator response):

The doctor has somewhat cleared me to do firefighter duty but I am must take Advair 250/50.  He also stated that my lungs should impove with time.

Unless you have a history of smoking, then I don't believe it is COPD. It looks like you have some asthma going on there. I suspect you dont' have overly large lungs. Your FEV1 is on the low side, but your FEV1/FCV is fine, as it is not below 70 (which is a sign of obstruction). I agree with your doctor, it's most likely some asthma that needs dealing with. The inhalers will bring  up your numbers and I don't see why you can't do your work with the Fire department. Asthma is very treatable.
