Barking cough

My son is having issues with a dry barking cough. He is 15 years of age and has had a chest xray-clear,bloodwork-also clear. He only coughs when he is awake and it goes away when he is asleep. He coughs so much that he is only awake for short periods of time. He is stating that he feels weak and only wants to sleep. His doctor says that she thinks it's asthma and has put him on prednisone and an albuteral inhaler as well as allergy meds. It has done nothing! All of the tests were clear so she says that it has to be asthma. Since he is on all of these meds shouldn't this cough go away? I am at my wits end...she set him up for allergy testing but that is not until Feb 2nd. What do we do about the cough now? He has missed 2 weeks of school already and due to the swine flu scare the school will not let him back in. Anything I can do to help him?

Hi and welcome to our community. I am not really sure -- will your doc allow some Sudafed or something like that .. if he is having a drip and nothing to cough it could present as bark but I'm not a Dr., just a member.
