Burning Sensation in lungs and throat

Burning Sensation in lungs and throat

I am a healthy 29 year woman who does not smoke and was diagnosed with asthma as a child.    Over the years I have not been using inhalers or any medications.  I have kept it very under control.  However, 3 days ago I woke up with an intense burning sensation in both my throat and my chest.  I have a horrible cough which has caused my throat to become so raw that I choke when I take in a breath.  I am spitting up mucus which was white on the first two days and now is a yellowish green.  The burning sensation in my lungs has gotten worse and I really cant tell if this is a simple irritation (possibly standing near a cigarette smoker), asthma or allergies.  It's also waking me up in the middle of the night and things like hot tea don't seem to give any relief.  Any thoughts?
