The Yog Pranayam (breathing exercises) will  help with controlling asthma  problems. You will see the result in months, as the need for inhaler will decrease.
Initially do bhastrika and anulom vilom for 2 weeks, and then do all. Let me know how he feels after 4 weeks.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after 1 minute.

Bhastrika pranayam - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose. Duration upto 5 minutes.Place your fists, with the thumb pointing up, on the the legs, above the the knee, and do bhastrika for one minute.Repeat this for one minute, but with the fists upside down, so that the thumb is pointing down, and resting on the legs.

Kapalbhati pranayam -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 10 to 30 minutes twice a day. Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
Children under 15 years – do for 5 to 10 minutes.

Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do for 5 to 10 minutes.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 21  times

Once you are better, continue the pranayam once a day.
Be patient, as the benefits will show over a period of weeks.Only by doing you will benefit and feel good because you are helping your body.

If a person has smoked for thirty years the liklihood is they have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. They may have difficulty breathing and symptoms that are similar or identical to someone with asthma.

It is unclear to me why he has not been prescribed medications to provide relief. I suspect he has seen a physician but does not care to share this information with others.

He requires an evaluation by a pulmonary specialist.

In the early to late states there are several drug protocols, all requiring a prescription and careful monitoring. Sometimes an electric aerosolizer is provided to keep in the house that sprays a mist of albuterol sulfate (through a mask) in the lungs. This is the medication used in an emergency inhaler. Ocasionally an electric oxygen concentrater is prescribed for home use with a certificate of necessity (in the United States).

The liklihood is he has a number of medical co-factors contributing to his disability.

I urgue you to talk to him about his medical needs and see if you can assist in ensuring he gets under proper medical care.

Well, the doctor at the local hospital is the best thing.

I had terrible asthma when I was a kid, and grew out of it. Except for cats and extreme exercise, it's controlled. There are home remedies and such, but his smoking is probably the worst thing. A spoon full of honey a day is said to help. If the breathing gets bad (first go with hospital) but sitting in front of a fan on high can help.

I am a little confused though, he doesn't have any medications for it? I would think at least an inhaler would be on him all the time. I carry mine and might have to use it like 3 times a month if that.

Honestly, your..........his best bet is to go see a doctor.
