How do you keep your asthma under control? And why is it that young adults 18 and older develope asthma so late?

You should work with your family doctor to control your symptoms. If you have to use your rescue inhaler more then a couple times per week outside of exercise, then you need more treatment to control asthma. A preventative inhaler should be incorporated into your treatment plan. For some who have very mild asthma they can get away with taking only Singulair regularly, but for many they require a low dose steroid inhaler. If these inhalers still don't work then a long acting bronchodilator (LABA) needs to be incorporated, such as Advair or Symbicort. Sometimes underlying conditions can make asthma difficult to control, such as GERD, sinusitis or unknown allergies. When the underlying conditions have been dealt with, then the asthma will improve and be much easier to control.

Asthma can develop at any age really, but most commonly during childhood. Sometimes children who have mild asthma are not diagnosed with it and then outgrow the asthma during their teens. But once they reach their 20's it often returns (and at times with a vengeance).

The best thing to do is to work with your doctor to get the best treatment plan that works to control your asthma. Controlled asthma equals good quality of life. Uncontrolled asthma can wreak havoc on one's life and make it absolutely miserable.
