Excessive mucus build-up - Cannot breath

I am an 18 years old female. As of Thursday (1/21/10) for the past four days I have had excessive mucus build-up in my chest. It is now Monday (1/25/10) My airways still feel constricted. When I fully inhale I feel a bubbly sensation in my lungs. I am uncomfortable because I cannot not keep a steady breathe paste. I am constantly striving to get a fair amount of oxygen. Also, I cannot sleep a full night, I awake daily at 3:00am. I keep spitting up clear, yellow and sometimes brown mucus. I purchased Robitussin to break up the mucus and relieve me of congestion. It does not help at all. I am not a smoker and I am not diagnosed with Asthma. I am an active teenager. Although I don't play any sports, I workout daily and eat healthy. This has just suddenly started to occur. I need to get back to my healthy self because I'm in ROTC which requires me to be able to participate in PT and Drills. I don't have a medical refer to exempt me from those activities. Also I have a physical examination coming up soon for the U.S Air Force. If I don't meet requirements or I am diagnosed with Asthma then there is no chance of me qualifying for the military.

What could be the cause?
Please and thank you in advance.

Welcome to the asthma community!

Hi it sounds like you have a case of acute bronchitis, which can take up to 10 days to clear up. If you are having a lot of breathing issues, then you really should see your doctor for some treatment to alleviate some of these symptoms. Asthma is often suspected if a person experiences many repeat boughts of acute bronchitis. I don't think you should be worrying about something you don't currently have. Leave the diagnosing to your doctor. Most importantly is to get relief for your symptoms and to rest up till you are better.
