Having trouble breathing

by ugates, Jul 03, 2009 04:54PM
I have had bronchitis for about two to three weeks.  I went to the doctor two weeks ago and got a antibiotic.  The other day I went and got a steroid shot and a inhaler.  They also gave me cough medicine with codeine.  The codeine keeps me wide awake.  I can not take it.  Last night I think I had a asthma attack.  I was real bad wheezy, coughing continuously, kept wetting myself ( I am 32 years old and I have been wearing diapers since this started), I also had a rapid heart beat.  When I would take a breath their was a whistling sound.  It was very scary.  I finally feel asleep about 5:30 this morning.  This happened after I took the inhaler.  Could I be allergic to the inhaler or could this be a asthma attack?  Could I not have bronchitis and just have developed asthma?
They also did a chest x-ray and CBC and both were okay.  My doctor has not called me back yet just wanted some suggestions on what other people think.  I will of course stick to what my doctor says.  If this happens again should I go to the hospital?  It was very scary last night.  I just wished I could get some sleep.  I still feel wheezy when I breath.

Hi,

Defintely call your dr. back today and insist he/she get back to you today.   Have you ever had codeine before?  Did it settle down and not come back again until you took your next dose?  The codeine can cause insomnia I believe.  I'll try to post a link from our drug database on it for you .. I cannot take codeine ... I vomit awful from it.

Some doctors prefer not to use codeine and want you to be able to expel what's making you cough; but if it's that profuse you need something.

I am not a Dr., but ask your Doc ... the rapid heartbeat may be a side effect of the inhaler.

I'll post some links below for you to reference as you wait to hear back from your physcian.

WELCOME to our community!
