How bad is black mold?

My nine year old son has moderately severe asthma, we are getting ready to move into an old house that has had lots of water damage and is showing mildew. We are doing the fixing up right now and are replacing all of the plumbing and the walls and flooring where there has been water damage. I've heard conflicting studies on mold and what it does to your health. My concern is that there is bound to be mold in places that we aren't seeing and I'm worried about the affects it might have on his breathing. What are some of the things I need to watch for as far as breathing problems and illnesses caused by mold?

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Mold is a common indoor triggering factor for Asthma. Preventing moisture and proper ventilation will help control the mold growth. He can be started on Steroid inhalers, which are used regularly for prevention of attacks. The steroid content is very low in an inhaler and only acts locally. Use will prevent the causative allergens from triggering an attack. Repeated cold with nasal blockage can trigger attacks. Keep the nostrils clear of blockages by using nasal drops or sprays and try steam inhalation.

Alternatively an allergy specialist can help identify if exposure to mold will trigger an asthmatic attack.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
