Mucus plugs?

by chelseag, Apr 19, 2009 10:49AM
Ugh, almost every other day I'm really conscious about how my breath smells, because I have these nasty white or light green things in my throat.

My first encounter with these horrible things was when I was maybe 7/8.
It felt weird trying to swallow, and I was getting this really disgusting taste in my mouth when I did.
When I finally cough the thing up and was holding it in my hand, I smelled it, and it was TERRIBLE!
I wanted to throw up.

but ever since then, when I would feel one, I would take a Q-tip and push them out. Sometimes, I would taste it in my mouth or feel it, and when I'd check, they weren't in the holes that were formed in my tonsils from them, so i just thought that they were too far in the hole for me to get them by pushing with the Q-tip.

But, this morning, I wake up, and I cannot stand the feelin gone bit, so I get a bunch of Q-tips, and start to go at them. They were small, but some were large. I started to gag, because I had to spend so much time touching my tonsils, and I vomited a little.

My doctor told me that they were something called mucus plugs, and that if they appear, I should drink water.

But the thing is, I go through about 7 bottles of water A DAY sometimes, and there is still no change.

It's just so upsetting and disgusting, and I just want to get rid of them soo bad! I'm so self-conscious that my breath is smelling all of the time, and I'm scared to even talk to people, because I'm scared that they're going to notice my foul-smelling and terribly horrid breath.

I play softball and soccer, and i'm quite active (going to the gym at least 4 day's a week). My doctor diagnosed me with Sports Asthma, because when I begin to get active, it's sometimes hard to breath, but that has changed since I was younger (i was diagnosed at about 9, and I'm 14 now), and I am able to control my breathing and the pain.

but PLEASE help me! I really don't think I can handle it anymore.

look up tonsils stones, if it is the same thing I get then it is those.  I have yet to find a way to get rid of them.  Chewing gum a lot helps, I end up just keeping the gum in my mouth and running it over my tongue every so often, from my mom this stops the breath.

Your symptoms do point towards tonsil stones. Do you recurrently keep getting tonsillitis or earaches?

A quick brushing with a toothbrush may remove surfaced tonsil stones. Another effective way to remove tonsil stones is by pressing a finger or cotton swab against the bottom of the tonsil and pushing upward. The pressure acts to squeeze out stones. A remedy for removing them without stimulating the gag reflex is to simply flex the throat and swallow, which causes the tonsils to tense up and will sometimes result in the tonsil stone popping out.
Embedded tonsil stones, which develop inside tonsils are not easily removed, but will naturally erupt from the tonsils with time.

I have the same problem as well i used the cotton buds as well but the stones that are yelloish sometimes a bit green would come out one after the other. It has been depressing me coz i am a very clean person and these smelly stones have taken my confidence away.I was refered to an Ent but they said it was just mucus so yesterday i googled my problem and discovered a Thera Breath site.I remember using their mouthwash but it was taken of the market i used to buy it in boots and it used to really freshen my breath

I don't know if this will work, but it is worth a try. I was suffering from thick mucus which was hard to cough up. So I started taking a natural mucolytic (mucus thinner). I take vitamin B5 and it works like a charm. The usual dose would be 500 mg or 1000 mg daily. There are no side effects. The question is whether what you have is mucus or something else. Anyway vitamin B5 is harmless. If it works it will melt the "stones."
