Please Help Me!

My son is 2 1/2.  Since he was able to walk I was sure he had asthma.  Although he never had any weezing, any time he was in active play he would cough.  The doctor has prescribed him an albuteral inhaler, a nebulizer, and a qvar inhaler.  None of those seem to make much of a differnce.  Mostly because by the time I get the emergency inhaler to him, he's already done coughing. Even using the other inhalers, he still coughs everytime he runs.  In December of 10' my family came down with a cold.  Still to this day, my son has the same cough that came with that cold.  I know that sometimes coughs can take a long time to get rid of, so I waited to take him to the doctor until last week.  The doctor was unable to hear any weezy and found no fever, so she did nothing.  Just yesterday things began to get terribly worse.  His coughing went from every hour to 3-4 times a minute at times.  I'm getting really worried and I am wondering if this the asthma, the cold, or both put together.  My doctor still does not seem to concerned. He does have an appointment tomorrow but I have a feeling that I will walk away again with no answers.  If anyone can give me some insight into what is really going on with my son you would truly be an angel!

PS- my daughter NEVER wheezed. She coughed when active and her neck sunk in at the collar bone when she had a cold.

I would start by seeing his pediatrician, then an immunologist specialist. My daughter got allergy tested at 3 years old and founds that she was allergic to ALL animals. Even though she was on treatment it didnt work because we had a cat. We got rid of the cat, encased beds etc, and put her on a daily breathing treatment called pulmicort. Taking albuterol daily is not healthy. She is 5 today and my life has changed. I was sad knowing she has to take breathing treatments and that she cant spend the night with cats, but no more ER trips for us! Hope this helps

You can always see another doctor and get a second opinion.  Since the cough is increasing then obviously the medication is not working and something else should be tried.

You could try talking to your doctor during your next appointment and if he doesn't seem to listen, then set up an appointment with a different doctor - this gives a fresh look on his symptoms.

Good luck!!

And of course, if your son gets worse, unable to stop coughing, blueish tint to nails or lips then it's a trip to the ER.
