Prednisone tapering...

by Kat03, Mar 22, 2008 09:12PM
I have had asthma since I was a child, but have went through the past several years with no issues other than occasional shortness of breath.  Over the winter, it started coming back, and I finally went to the doctor for it.
She wants me to start taking prednisone at 20 mg for 14 days.  I used to take prednisone quite often for the asthma, so that is not new to me, but when I took it before, I would always taper off it very slowly...I'd go from 60 mg to 50 mg, and so on until I was down to 5 mg then stop after a week of that.
Anyways, to get to my question, she gave me the 20 mg for 14 days, but said that I do not need to taper off it and that I can just go off it at that point.  Seeing as I was always told it was something that had to be tapered off of slowly, I am a little hesitant.
Any ideas on this anyone?  She had told me that it was no longer considered necessary to taper when on a dose 20 mg or lower, but I am afraid of the side effects when going off it.
