Problems with breathing

I quite often feel like I cannot breathe. It happens pretty much every night when I lay on my side, so I have to try and position the top half of my body to be flat. It also happens throughout the day as well, and can get worse the more I think about it. It feels like I am breathing, but nothing is going into my lungs, so I have to take quite a few breathes to finally get the one big one, then after the big one I then have to start it again. This can go on for hours. Sometimes I even make myself yawn to try and get the aount of air that I need. I also find it hard to breath out of my nose when this happens. And sometimes it feels as if I am out of breathe even though I am just laid in bed. This has been going on for quite a few years now but is happening more often these days. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my breathing?

You really need a thorough examination by a physician. You presentation is not normal in any way, shape or form.

And a cardiac etiology has to be ruled out.

You have lived with this problem for a long time and you need a thorough medical exam to get to the bottom of this. Do not assume that it cannot get worse and threaten your life.

There is not enough exalation from your lungs. These pranayam techniques will help you.Do the kapalbhati first for a few minutes.Let me know how you feel in 3 weeks.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Kapalbhati pranayam -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 21  times.
