Veramyst... has anyone tried it?

Hi,

I recently had a Dr. apt . and was given a sample of Veramyst.  I have had  no results with other nasal sprays so far, but am hopeful.  Anyone have any comments or knowledge of how this drug works and if results are good?  My asthma is out of control and I have excessive mucus that may be a result of of my allergic rhininitis.  Hopefully if I can stabalize the sinusitis the asthma will get better. My breathing test yeaterday was in the poor categorie.  I never had this type of test before with a computerized program , it had flames on the screen and as I blew flames went out.  I thought I did good , but was told not so. Yikes I was shocked to see how poorly my lungs are working.  I take Asmanex 2 puff dailey and albuteral for rescue. I need that about 2x a day.  I cough out volumes of mucus but so far on day 2 of the veramyst thing have slowed some. I do feel spacey and headachey though, I wonder if thats the veramyst.  I'm a mess and trying to get a grip.  Any comments appreciated.

Veramyst™ (fluticasone furoate) Nasal Spray is an inhaled steroid for the nose as Asmanex® Twisthaler® 220 mcg (mometasone furoate inhalation powder) is an inhaled steroid for the lungs.  A nasal steroid spray can be very effective in the treatment of rhinitis and sinusitis.  However a nasal steroid spray does not provide immediate relief of symptoms.  It may need to be used every day for several weeks to months for it to help.  To get the most out of a nasal steroid spray use it after doing a nasal wash.  A nasal wash helps remove mucus from the nose and sinuses.  Please read our nasal wash treatment information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/treatments/alt-ther/nasal-wash.aspx to learn more about this technique.  Share this information with your doctor to see if you would benefit from this daily treatment.

You are correct in believing that control of your asthma will be dependent on control of your rhinitis and sinusitis.  The excessive mucus is most likely from both your upper and your lower respiratory tract.  You might also ask your doctor about a trial of Singulair® (montelukast sodium) which can be therapeutic for asthma and rhino-sinusitis.  Finally, the addition of a long-acting beta-agonist inhalant, such as Serevent® Diskus® (salmeterol xinafoate inhalation powder) or Foradil® Aerolizer™ (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder) might increase the effectiveness of your inhaled steroids and you might want to discuss this with your doctor.
