Hi sounds like it may be reactiveReactive arthritis asthma. Your Dr can determine if so and a treatment plan of meds, etc. It may "react" to the environment or illness.
There are various modern treatment protocols. Avoidance of salt has no relationship to your problems. Neither will drinking 4-5 liters of water. There is an Iranian physician that advocates hydration therapy and has written a book on it, however there is no solid evidence it helps.
Common treatments in the United States include anti-inflamatories, drugs to remove mucus, and drugs to open up (and keep open) the airways. In some cases acupuncture may help. Another protocol is to de-sensitize a person to a specific antigen by careful administarion of a substance to which they are alergic (allergic). And, of course, avoidance of dust and antigens. This means control of the environment.
Post-infection syndrome is common, and getting rid of these infections can be a bear. Often you start with a viral infection and then a bacterial infection piggybacks. Problems with breathing may last for weeks. This is a crummy situation.
There is no simple answer to your question, but evaluation at a center that specializes in asthma will be helpful.

Asthma is caused by an immune system reaction to an antigen, or non-self substance.
