asthma

by flipper43, Sep 18, 2007 11:40AM
my question deals with (asthma) stopped breathing and zero respirations treatment . which treatment is indicated first- respiratory therapy with use of a (HHN) or endotracheal intubation ? the second part of my question is can both treatments be performed at the exact same time or would one take precedent over the other ?
                         respectfully .

The first treatment should be to gain control of the person's airway by basic life support and then, supported assisted ventilation.  The assisted ventilation can be performed with a face mask or endotracheal tube.  Assuming that cessation of breathing was in response to severe obstruction of the airways, by asthma the next step would be the delivery of a short-acting bronchodilator, via the airway.  Complete cessation of breathing, due to a severe exacerbation of asthma, is a life threatening emergency.  The use of the mask should be seen as a temporizing measure and the endotracheal tube placed as soon as it is possible to do it safely.

why want someone answer my question or is it a dumb founded question ?

Asthma doesn't mean you stop breathing...asthma should be treated long before it gets to that point.  Other than that, I really don't have an answer for your question...it's over my head.

Good luck!  Not a dumb question, just too advanced for me.

thank-you nurse for answering my previous question , following endotracheal intubation is it necessary for a patient be placed on a mechanical ventilator or would endotracheal intubation be sufficent enough ?
