chronic cough dx w cough variant asthma

I have had a chronic productive cough for 10 months (yes moonths).  It started as a cold and then turmed to a cough, and the cough never went away.  I have been through multiple rounds of antibiotics, steroids, sinus surgery ( no symptoms but my scan looked terrible, w all sinuses almost completely inflamed wout air fluid levels)  I have recently had a methacholine challenge and was dx w cough variant asthma.  What causes this and is it a permenant condition?  I have read mixed opinions. I am an otherwise healthy 45 yo female.  I was rarely sick before this condition and do not want to take medicine chronically if at all possible.  I have taken advair (500) for a week and am now on the 250 dose for 4-6 weeks.  How can I get rid of this!?!

It is a type of asthma that has only cough as its symptom.  It is a chronic disease so no you can't (completely) get rid of it.  The idea is to take the least amount of medicine to keep the symptoms under control.

I have cough variant asthma.  The only difference between this and "normal" asthma is that we cough instead of wheeze.  Other than that, it is treated the same way.  Besides the cough, I feel a tightness in my chest that feels like somebody is sitting on me.  Before I was diagnosed with asthma, I had tests to rule out heart.  As far as getting rid of it, like Tammy said, it's a chronic disease.

Please don't do what I did & stop using the Advair just because you feel better for a while.  When I did that, I ended up in the ER with a PFT of 50.  My doctor told me that the reason I had felt better before was because it was being controlled by the Advair.

I found that inhaled steroids made the condition worse. For one thing, they are drying. So I stopped and instead started a course of natural anti-inflammatories. The most helpful was vitamin B5 which is also a mucolytic (mucus thinner). Along with thinning the mucus B5 also drained my sinuses and the headaches are a thing of the past. I take 1000 mg. daily. There are no side effects. I still cough, but not as often or as violently.
