coughing

I cough to a point where I vomit a thick mucus......Seems I only vomit from my throat, if there is such a thing, as its not the same as when I'm sick...no burning in my throat.  I have not had a cold, so don't think its post nasal drip........The cough seems to come outta nowhere and nothing brings it on. Not worse at nite or when laying down. I've had this cough for 6 months and have mentioned it to my dr. several times.  I wanted to get tested for asthma, but he said my chest is clear...Any suggestions?

Hi Loviee,

If your doctor won't test you for asthma, you should try a different doctor.  Any cough that lasts that long should be looked into.  Can you ask your doctor to refer you to a pulmonary doctor?

Asthma in adults can present as a cough only, without any obvious other symptoms.  It is easy to test for asthma, so do push for proper assessment and treatment.

My 5 year old daughter has the same problem. She was diagnosed with asthma when she was 15 months. The asthma comes on differently where she would seem to be having a whooping cough but no wheezing.I'm a nurse so I would allow her to sleep with me and when she falls asleep I would check her lungs and it'll be clear but her cough is harsh with no prodution and it seems difficult. One thing I can say is that know what triggers the asthma, and when you feel it coming start taking in fluids and make sure you are taking vitamins daily.Along with that frequent exersice can help your body to stay healthy. When you breath, breath through your nose.Your nose is a filtering organ where it will filter out any particles from reaching the lungs.Chammomile tea works well with respiratory problems.Rest!!!Many problems come through too much stress and the body is giving off warning signs. One thing I know that will never fail is to ask God,the creator of us all,He'll tell you whats wrong and believe He will.Take care and God Bless.
