Yes, it def increases a child's heart rate. All meds have some sort of side effects. The positive with this medication outweighs the negative.

We have this problem with our 3 yr old. He takes a lot of albuterol and 2 puffs of symbicort twice a day. We were told to monitor his heart rate, when he was hospitalized once he had it raised hours after he had a treatment. He also gets the shakes after repeat emergency treatments. It is scary but they have to breath.

Hi, Nicole!

Yes, albuterol definately causes the heart rate to increase rapidly. This uncomfortable side effect is one of the primary reasons we pulled our daughter off of it but still use it on an as needed basis only (very minimally).

A direct definition from drugs.com states:

"albuterol side effects
Stop using Albuterol and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as: bronchospasm (wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing), especially after starting a new canister of this medicine;

chest pain and fast, pounding, or uneven heart beats;

tremor, nervousness; or

dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).

Less serious side effects may include:

headache, dizziness, nervousness;

sleep problems (insomnia);

cough, hoarseness, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose;

dry mouth and throat;

muscle pain; or

diarrhea.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect."

All the Best!
