hyperinflated

My son is 8 yrs old and he has be diagnosis with lungs hyperinflated without areas of peripheral infiltrates. A year ago his lungs were clear of any adnormality. He was riding in a vehicle which the windsheild and sun roof broken which left fibers and fiber glass and glass dust in the vents which he inhale for 2.5 years. Inhaling these fibers is it possible that this could be the cause of the hyperinflated.

The most common cause of hyperinflated or hyperlucent lungs, in a boy your son's age, would be asthma, especially if both lungs have the same appearance.  It is possible that his inhalation of the materials you describe could have harmed his lungs, but much less likely, given the fact that there are no pulmonary infiltrates.  However, many irritant substances can cause a more serious condition called bronchiolitis obliterans, resulting in hyperinflation.

One should not rely upon a chest x-ray to make the diagnosis of clinically significant lung disease.  Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) is a better way and a CT scan of his lungs may be necessary, as well.  Physical examination of his lungs may also give a clue, as to what, if anything, is going on.

If his doctor is at all uncomfortable with such an approach to evaluating your son's lungs, you should request consultation with a pediatric pulmonologist.

Good luck
