inhalers and swine flu

Would anyone know if using beclamethasone inhaler increases the danger of swine flu infection due the suppression of the immune system?
Thnx.

Thnx for the posts, and for your reassurance. I tend to get asthma attacks in this season. I had been using the preventive inhaler for some months, but since my doctor was not very clear as to how long I should continue it, and also due to the swine flu worry, I came off it. I am wary of using the reliever due to episodes of tachycardia.
Have a good 2010.

The answer is, theoretically speaking, yes. Practically speaking, my guess is, no. Many airborne pathogens enter the body through the lungs and the alveoli. All steroidal inhalers reduce the sensitivity of these surfaces to non-self substances (antigens).  In the case of aerolozed inhalers the immune reaction in the area of the alveoli is reduced. There are many factors involved in the transmission of viral illnesses, and many are not clearly understood. The mucosal suface of the eye, for example, can provide a point of entry.  You are taking these inhalers for a reason. Asthma can be life-threatening. There is a risk-benefit, and the risk is inconsequential in relation to the benefit.

Using steroid inhalers will certainly not depress your immune system, as very little can even make it systemically (into your blood) into your system. The steroid acts topically on the surface of your airways. You would have to ingest oral steroids, such as prednisone, in sufficient quantities for an extended time period to affect your immune system.

I would not worry about getting the swine flu because of your inhalers. However, if you get bad asthma exacerbations from viruses, then I recommend that you get the swine flu shot. I understand that this particular flu tends to go deep into your lungs and having asthma on top of that puts you at high risk of complications.

Have a good holiday and relax!
