moms allergies not looking good?! :/ anybody help!

by Arizonagirl, Jun 02, 2007 12:00AM
I was wondering if anyone could help?
Since i was very young my mom has always had allergies.
She always coughs, and hacks! She does have flem (phlegm). She does tend to loose weight as well! Alot! :/ She said its because she cant taste anything or even eat, cause the flem (phlegm) and her sinuses always drain into her stomack?!?! (is this true?)
She used to be on this shot in California, (sorry i dont remeber the name, it was some kind of man steroid, not usually used by women) But as far as i know they took it off the market! She did gain weight , obviously, but she didnt care she was healthy!
That was the only time I had ever seen her completly healthy, eating and not sick looking!
She cant afford to go to the doctors!
I have talk to some pharmacys and some say i prob. need to get a dr.RX for Zyrtec. I do know that allegra and clarinex has not worked for her in the past!
Is there any programs out there for women age 45 and up??
What can i do to help her?!?!

Worried in Arizona!!!

Hi Arizonagirl, I have a lot of allergies and drainage constantly in the back of my throat, but the only thing has worked well for me, is round the clock Benadryl. It really helps dry up the dripping that I get in the back of my throat, and I have been using the Benadryl for years, per my doctor's instructions. Most people complain about Bendadryl because it can make a person feel drowsy, but since I take it so often, I have gotten more used to it. I am not a doctor or medical person, but I just wondered if your mom has tried this? I am in my fifties, and I also have a very rare disease called angioedema. Sometimes my throat swells up inside, and then I have to take quite a few Benadryl to get the swelling to do down, and I drink a lot of cold or iced water. If your mom has no income, can she get medical assistance in your state?

Hope she feels better! Good luck!

Im not sure if she has tried benadry?l?! I will see! Is Angioedema related to asthma or allergy? If you dont mind  me asking? And thank you for your advice!

I appreciate your concern for your Mom. I hope she doesn't have asthma but please check with an allergist. I found it the hard way that there are different types of asthma. I kept coughing with clear flem (phlegm) as far as I can remember & thought it was all because of allergies. I'm 38 years old right now and just found out  out that I also have cough variant asthma( kept coughing and have a clear phlegm). I also have severe allergies to trees, grass, dust mites. I used benadry in the morning  and loratadine in the evening per my allergist instruction . But what helped most witht he coughing is the asthma inhaler.
