my asthma is getting worse and inflicting pain

by marsonge, Jul 30, 2009 08:51PM
I was diagnosed with minor athletic indused asthma about a year ago.  I also have seasonal alerges.  Recently, within the last few weeks and months, i have been having difficulty breathing.

This may be completely unrealated, but about three months ago, i broke my nose.  I have a deviated septum in my nose.  i am not able to breathe very well out of the left nostril.  I am not sure if that has been affecting my breathing, but i feel it may be possible.

About a week ago, i slipped and feel in the car, and my left side below my rib cage slammed into the steering wheel.  Ever since, when i have been having problems breathing (usually at night), i get a sharp pain in the area when i take deep breaths.  I don't know if that means something is wrong, or if that is just delayed pain from the fall.  Can someone give me some answers?

Well, breathing problems at night is uncontrolled asthma. And pain in your side that you hit when taking deep breaths could be a cracked rib. I did that once and it's painful to take deep breaths because of that. So, you should probably see your doctor for both.

Might want to get an opinion from a ear, nose and throat doctor to see if breaking your nose has damaged your nose.  It might have changed the deviated septum to a point that something should be done to fix it.

Anything that is very painful and doesn't improve greatly within 24 hours should be seen by a doctor.

Let us know how you are making out   :)

I went to an ENT for my deviated septum two months ago, and he said he wasnt sure if it would effect my asthma,

Its been over a week since i hurt my side and it still hurts a little.  The only reason i wouldn't go to the doctor is they can't do anything to treat a cracked or broken rib unless it hits a major organ.  My mom broke a rib a few months ago and she just endured the pain waiting for it to heal because they couldn't do anything for it.

I had some problems breathing last night and couldn't get to sleep but i'm holding up...its just painful.  When i sit or lay certain ways, my side hurts but i can live with a little pain:)

Thanks:)))

I found taking painkillers at night (ie tylenol 3) at least helped me to sleep with the cracked rib. With rest at least you can heal. I only took the tylenol 3 before going to sleep for the night. It did take about 2 months if I recall to heal on its own.

Oh and one more thing. I too have had a deviated septum in the past that caused my sinuses to be chronically infected. The infection affected my asthma rather badly. If I recall correctly at one point initially they thought I just had rhinitis, and I was told to deal with it. But even there all the excess mucous runs down the back of your throat and into your lungs, which then have to cough it back up. It was my lung specialist who complained that my nose was ruining my quality of life and said that I had to see the ENT guy again and get something done about my sinus problems. So I don't think I would just disregard it. If you find you have problems with sinus infections, then you should get something done about it.

I saw a plastic surgeon today about my nose.  All he said was that it was definatly deviated (which i already knew, thanks doc) but that it wasn't affecting my breathing at all.
(hm doc, my asthma has worsened since i broke my nose, thinking somethings wrong here.....)
he also said he didn't see a reason to repair it, so im going to start a field hockey season with a deviated septum.  and breathing problems.  and lack of sleep due to breathing problems.  THANKS DOC

The pain from my rib is getting better.  i really think it might just have been bruised.  still a little pain, but nthing i can't shake off :)
