Does my son have asperger's syndrome?

My son is a young teen in middle school.  He is gifted, musically talented, and gets all A's, but has very flat feet and therefore is uncomfortable with participation in sports.  He has always been a happy child, but even as a baby I noticed he was unusual, in that he could sit and concentrate on a "project toy" for long periods of time.  He is quite sensitive but also extremely compassionate.  He has been a victim of non-physical bullying since fifth grade.  He reports that he just feels "different" than other children his age.  He feels awkward in a group, always feeling left out.  This is very painful for him, especially now in the teen years, wanting to fit in with his peers.  His inclination is to drop out and give up.  I do not think this is a healthy response.

Based on your description, I can’t be sure if that diagnosis is appropriate for him or not. However, if you have concerns, absolutely have him assessed. Also, even if he doesn’t receive any diagnosis, I recommend seeking out some help for him for those issues you note. The diagnosis can help with identifying the kids who need services but issues that your son is experiencing with socialization and fitting in can and should be addressed in and of themselves.
