My 2.4 yr old son is not talking

My 2.4 yr old son says about 15 words if we coax him. He does not understand simple commands other than no and go bye bye. He can count to 13 forwards and backwards and he knows his abc's.  He knows some shapes but not colors.He never stops moving,climbing and jumping ever it is constant along with his babbling that we cant understand. He has little eye contact unless he wants something.He points sometimes but mostly he pulls us over to what he wants. He gives kisses and hugs. I cant read to him b/c he takes the book and throws it or grabs it out of my hand and starts flipping the pages back and forth. He does look at books quietly in his room when he's alone. He is afraid of strangers and he does not want to be left with anyone even his grandparents. He doesnt have tantrums and he is pretty easygoing during the day when he is with us he laughs and smiles a lot. Pls help me figure out whats going on...thank-you

The first thing I would suggest is to discuss these issues with your pediatrician.  Some of the behaviors you describe are emitted on occasion by some typical children as they go through the "terrible two's"; However, it will be important to discuss your concerns with him or her.  Some of these behaviors, such as taking your hand and leading you to a desired object, may occur because they allow him to get access to these items, without having to use his words.  Thus, to him, these behaviors are very efficient for him!

It may also be helpful to find someone in your area who is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, who has experience working with young children (you can search for someone in your area at www.bacb.com).  He or she may be able to provide you with information regarding how to best manage your sons behavioral challenges.
