AUTISM & ASPERGER'S SYNDROME EXPERT FORUM
Should I have him evaluated for Asperger's?

Should I have him evaluated for Asperger's?

Hello,
My 4-year-old son has good balance, has no real speech problems and seems to make good eye contact, however, he seems a little different than the other children at his preschool when it comes to interacting with other children. I do notice that he really doesn't make "small talk" and he plays by himself most of the time. He cries usually every day and doesn't want to go to school but once he's there he's usually OK. He does seem obsessed with certain topics and wants to know everything about a particular topic once his interest is sparked. We've had MAJOR problems with potty training. He will pee on the potty fine but he refuses to poop on the potty. While he is potty trained, he will go and put on a pull-up any time he needs to poop. When we try to get him to go on the potty he will hold it for days at a time even to the point where he gets constipated or just goes in his underwear when he can't hold it any longer. He is extremely sensitive to loud noises and holds his ears when things get to loud or when my husband or I raise our voice to him. He's also very sensitive to bright lights. I haven't noticed any problems with crowds or certain fabrics, though he doesn't like large tags inside his clothing. He also gets a bit obsessed with certain things and it often causes behavior problems and anger issues. For example, if I open his can of coke and he wanted to do it, he will scream and cry sometimes for long periods of time and won't let it go. It seems like small things like that set him off and he becomes very angry and hard to deal with. He also gets very excited at times and flaps his arms or makes fisits with both hands. I thought it was cute when he was small but it almost seems to be getting worse the older he gets. Overall, he a a great little boy and very loving and sweet. I just want to be sure if there is something wrong, I know the best way to help him. I worry a lot about him socially and would like to know how to help him. Thanks!

I'm 11 years old and have aspergers's and that sounds pretty much like how my parents describe me as being when i was younger (minus the pooping bit)

If you want to know he has aspergers then get him checked for it.

I'f you need any help with handling it then you can contact me anytime you want.
