AUTISM & ASPERGER'S SYNDROME EXPERT FORUM
could it be??

could it be??

My son will turn 4 in January and he just started three year old preschool this past summer.  He was a very late talker... wasn't using a lot of single words until he was almost three years of age.  He progresses daily.  His preschool notices him growing as well but there are some concerns.  He was in Early Intervention for a year seeing two different theripists one was a general worked with him on anything and everything and the other started coming for speech towards the end because that was the only concern.  The only feedback we ever got was that he could just be strong willed and they both felt I was ok to pull him out of the program and see how he did.  Well the preschool feels his motor skill may be behind. He will listen to everyone in class but then when its his turn to talk he gets upset... or if another chatter box in his class will talk and talk and talk sometimes he will get upset.  He has days where he seems fine and others where he doesn't  He is really hard to get to sleep at night even though he seems and tells me he is tired hours before bed time.  He is a picky eater... The preschool has told me that his social skills have come along since he started there three months ago so I dont know if it could be autism since he does socialize.  He says hi to stragers at stores he is very polite if he bumps in to someone he says sorry.  I have a call in to early intervention to do another evaluation on him but at this point wish I just knew how to help him.  Any time you ask him a question he may change it to his own subject and wont stop until you acknowledge his topic... then maybe you can go to your topic but most times its like he doesn't either get it or want to respond.  There are things that he doesn't like to do but as long as you tell him if you do this you can have fruit snacks he says ok and does it and then asks for his fruit snacks no tantrum.. I talk to my peditrician all the time and all they keep telling me is he is fine.

Some of it sounds normal and some of it sounds like asbergers syndrome, especially the one sidedconversation & delayed motor skills.  I have read that children with AS typically talk only about their interests & will not talk about other topics.  I  NOT an expert so take what I say with a grain of salt.  Keep searching, it might be just be a speech delay.  Good luck!!!!
