rapid eye movement while awake

Does anyone know what may cause rapid eye movement while awake and conscious?  My 15 year old  Autistic son woke up yesterday and complained that his "eyes were going crazy". He was rubbing them and noticed the eyes were moving rapidly back and forth uncontrollably. He was conscious during the state. The ER doctor says it doesn't sound to be like seizure activity and they were unsure what may have caused this.

I do not think I am qualified to answer this question directly but I would certainly follow-up with the person/team that has diagnosed your son and with a pediatric neurologist if the eye movements occur again.
