Autism Concerns

I am getting concerned about my 15-month old son.  Lately he has stopped bringing toys, objects, and books over to us and also stopped showing them to us.  He used to it.  He has never been big on sitting still for singing or playing with us.  I know they say that when a baby is learning a new skill they will sometimes take a break from other skills.  He repeats a lot of words and is a great walker.  He points at objects and at things in books but he does not do the look back at us.  Should I be concerned?

You should discuss your concerns with your pediatrician and potentially with a child psychologist. Lack of eye contact can indeed be a sign that the child is on the autism spectrum.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL

Hi!
Maybe your son is bored with the stimulus he has around him. Try taking him to a new place or reading a new book to him. Also, give one set of playthings and books to him and keep another set reserve. You can keep rotating the things as his attention span reduces. This will keep him motivated, stimulated and happy. However, if you have concerns about autism, please bring it up with his doctor. Also, do not try holding his gaze every time, just watch him go about his normal routine. Sometimes the child is more interested in something else than talking to you face to face! Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
