MMR Shot

I have hear alot about the MMR shot may be the cause of autism. My question is how old are kids when they get it? Is it a necessary shot to get? What is it for?  I know if I ask my dr she will tell me yes yes yes... get the shot. They seem to force those shots.  From the stories I've heard, I do believe that it has something to do with it. I'm no doctor, but I'm not taking any chances of my son becoming autistic. Any information on this shot would be so helpful!
Thank you!

The 1st MMRshot  is given between 12 and 15 months.
I think I may have had a reaction to it when I was a child in 1974...had 3 seizures in 1 day

Please remember though MMR is not the only one thats linked to autism...the DTaP has been as well.

I have taught children with autisim for 9 years.  Last year I started teaching preschool age.  Recently a 4 yr student of mine had his second MMR shot.  Now I totally understand why some parents feel this shot is in  someway connected with autisim. My student was completely different last week.  He was agitated over the least little thing - he was kicking and hitting - which was really unlike him.  Most teachers at school definitely noticed a difference and asked what happened to him.  I'm not advising to do it or not, but if I had a young child he/she would not get the MMR until after 4 yrs old.  I am reading a book "Unravaling Autism" and  she goes into great detail as to how she feels the MMR shot could cause autisim.  But you are right that the doctors will tell you YES, YES, YES.....

P.S
Bless you all that have autistic children! I'm not saying anything bad about kids that have it! My poor baby has had enough problems and adding this on would be so hard! Please do not take anything I say personal! I'm just doing what I need to do to protect him. That's all!!  :)
