Play Group for Special Needs

I am considering starting an open Play Group at the local Park for children with disabilities. We have one park in our town that is handi-cap accessible. Would you, as a parent of a child with a disability come? I think it would be a great way to meet other parents that are in similar situations. I am hoping that we can support each other. Some children do not fit into normal play groups. Am I crazy to think this would work?

That sounds like a good idea.  What if it is raining?  Is there anywhere undercover?  Some playgroups meet at indoor soft play centres and get better group rates, plus there is a cafe that they can use.

It sounds like you are looking at young toddler age children.

Just as an example, I go to a support group that meets fortnightly on Saturdays 10-12.  It is held in the gym of the local Community College.  The have one staff member present and some parents also help.  They put out all the gym equipment, trampoline and bouncy castle.  The children can let off steam for 2 hours.  It is for children on the autistic spectrum, ADHD, siblings and invited friends.  The rest of the parents meet in another room (similar to a school staff room).  We have access to drink making facities and we take turns to buy some biscuits/cakes etc.  For our group we were looking for a place where the children would be accepted and also where friends and siblings could meet other children in a similar situation.  Alot of the parents just need a break and spend the 2 hours reading/chatting/networking/asking advice etc.

If you get in touch with anyone providing support for children with autism, they should be able to tell you if there is already something similar in your area, and may be able to help publicise it.
Good luck.

I was thinking we could all just mingle and meet others that are dealing with some of the same issues such as, health, meds, school, friends, family, etc... Sometimes it is nice just to know that we are not alone. I feel that we can all learn from each other and who knows, friendships could start between us parents and our children.

Sounds like a good idea. Doesn't hurt to try. What kind of support would be given?
