Seemed to be getting better but now @ age 8 his speech hasn't progressed, social interaction/understanding school instruction going sharply downhill. Maybe a comprehension disorder? Loving, sociable, has diff time finding words to explain feelings, etc. U/A to read story and put into his own words on paper. Sometimes not aware of surroundings e.g. class lines up @ door, he's still sitting in chair. Currently 83#, 51".  Excellent in spelling, good in math, readg/writg needs improvement. Very good handwriting. I need to know what may be wrong as he IS going downhill. Both sound like ASD to me.... I have a 12 year old...  He had asthma but grew out of it..... I was told to give up my animals but went for allergy blood tests that indicated he had no allergies....   to the common asthma things... animals grasses, hay, trees, mold household dust.....     Many folks with ASD have food allergies   Gluten and Casin...... wheat and dairy sensitivities....Many also have siezures... and I am learning more about this aspect of autism and siezures and behavior...   Temple Grandin... author of several books on autism is an autistic adult who is an Animal scientist and engineer.  She is very smart but is also very autistic.... I would say she has a fantastic imagination.... one of her most popular books is "Thinking in Pictures"    All I can say is that you both sound like ducks to me!!!    Temple is very smart..... and Math ability is quite common.... that is where the term sevant comes into play.... I also have a nephew on the ASD spectrum that is great at writing poems and History, and plays guitar....  he is just HIGHER Functioning than my son...... This is a Spectrum disorder..... so there is not a One Size fits All description.... But Most of what I have read fits the basic bill.....   QUACK!     Gracem

Our son was born on 08/11/99 and having just read your piece we could almost have the same child!!!!. We had a visit with our sons psychiatrist yesterday and he still hasn't diagnosed our son with anything. He has serious issues with armflapping and repitious behaviours and has been retreating into his own world at a steady rate. I know he is 8 now and people would probably say "how come you are only looking for help now?". The answer to that is simple. We thought he was deaf as a baby, he had hearing test etc done and they said he was fine even though he didn't speak until 2 yrs. He was due to have speech therapy but we never heard anything more about it. He was bullied in school and the teachers put his behaviour(talking to himself and "imaginary games" in his head that he played while sitting at his desk) down to being "naughty". Needlesss to say we switched schools! Our son, like yours, has a fantastic imagination. He says he has thousands of characters in his head and he moves them by arm-flapping. He also writes greatly detailed stories but due to this his psychiatrist said he does'nt have an ASD. From what I have seen and read on forums and sites, a LOT of kids and adults with ASD's have FANTASTIC imaginations. It seems to be what gets them through things. By the way, our boy also reads a lot and is great at maths!
