delayed myelination

I have a three year old son who is autistic. We recently had a MRI done and they discovered a small pineal cyst in the lower-back portion of the brain. The doctors have told us that there is no connection between the cyst and his autism. They also have discovered an abnormality which suggests delayed myelination. I was wondering if the delayed myelination could have an effect on some of his delays. We have been doing speech therapy and ABA therapy for about a year. He is improving. He has a lot of words and is becoming more social. Are there any other treatments that we can do to help our son?

I think your question really need a profesisonal medical answer.  My knowledge only extends as far as knowing that myelination is around the nerves and helps speed up the nerve processing and transmission of information.
So I would go back to the health professionals and try to get more information from them.

There is research done that has found some children actually have antibodies to myelin basic protein.  If you google myelination and autism or dev delay lots will come up.  I know that fatty acids are very important to producing and maintaining healthy myelin so you maywant to research cod liver oil or other fatty acids.  nordic naturals has a chewable strawberry one that I can get my son to take it just takes quite a few of them.  Good luck and wish I knew more.  Holly
