I think that i would go with the Dr, and get some help for his speech, so many people are stuck with labels that they do not need   luck  jo

Most areas now have a centre that has experience and expertise in diagnosing an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  I would ask for your son to be referred to the nearest centre for a multi disciplinary team assessment by professionals that have experience and expertise in diagnosing ASDs.
A good SALT (Speech and Language Therapist) that has experience of speech disorders and ASDs should be able to give you a good idea as to whether he is on the spectrum or not.  They are also the professionals who advice on social interaction and play skills.
My son is now 8 and diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum.  He also has a sense of humour and likes to play jokes and he has a good idea of right from wrong.  He can also lie to get out of doing something he doesn't like and can tease etc.  However he also has significant difficulties in all the areas required for a diagnosis.  His main areas of difficulty does seem to be around speech, auditory processing, auditory processing disorder etc rather than just autism.  He has also been diagnosed with Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder - which is also now considered to be part of the autistic spectrum.  But he also has some abilities that more typically autistic children do not have.

Maybe he has ADHD and not autism.  What is lamtical anyway?  After checking with another doctor try to take him off lamtical and see how he behaves.  Give him fish oil and vitamins and a clean organic diet (no artificial coloring or preservatives) without lamtical if the doctor agrees.  If this does not work, make sure that the correct meidicine is provided to him for ADHD (most of all for hyperactivity).  These ADD/ADHD meds are stimulants such as Ritalin, Metadate and Anderall or non-stimulants such as Stratera (Strattera).  You need a child psychiatrist or child development pediatrict doc to correclty diagnose him.  These type of specialists usually do not make house calls.  Make sure that you have the right doctor before you medicate your child.  He might not have autism.  He might have ADHD or PDD-NOS or both together.  make sure you have a specialist and not just a general doctor.  How does he interact with other children? does he play with other kids?  If he is social with his peers, he might not have autism.  The hyper comment indicates ADHD.  If he is hyper and can not focus, how can he speak.  See if he has ADHD and treat it.  Once you treat the ADHD, see how his speech develops or not develops.  At that time, decide if he has autism.  I am not a doctor and this is just my opinion.  Please also make sure that he is getting speech therapy for his speech delay.  Good luck.
