Did you know that DIET is critical in RA?

Dr. Fuhrman M.D. speaks on RA in his book Fasting and Eating for Health.  He has treated over 10,000 patients in the last 10 years.

"Arthritis sufferers spend more than $1 Billion annually on **************. One
million new cases are diagnosed ever year, and the number is growing. Five
percent of American's elderly population suffer from this disease. It is called
the "nation's primary crippler". Recent studies have refuted the previously
held notion that rheumatoid arthritis has a favorable outcome. Patients
experience progressive decline in joint mobility and generally get steadily
worse in spite of today's toxic treatments. Such patients generally have a
four- to ten- year decrease in life expectancy.

More significantly, the prognosis is very poor for persons who have progressed
to multiple joint involvement. The five-year survival rate for severely
arthritic individuals with multiple joint involvement is about 45 percent. 14
Similar low survival rates are observed in patients with other very serious
illnesses, such as Hodgkin's disease and three-vessel coronary artery disease.

Traditionally, when less toxic medications are unable to control symptoms or
when the side effects became intolerable, the physicians will consider using
more powerful and more toxic chemotherapeutic agents, which have even more
dangerous side effects, including cancer.

In recent years, rheumatologists have been starting patients on the more toxic
chemotherapeutic agents earlier, or even as a primary approach, in a purely
theoretical attempt to slow down the progression of the disease. This practice
is prevalent even though there is little evidence to prove that it holds
long-term benefit for the patient. Although medications can reduce inflammation
and pain, the evidence collected so far indicates these drugs have little or no
effect on long-term outcome. 15, 16

Another recent study of arthritis patients reported that after 20 years of
treatments with the typical drugs including prednisone, methotrexate,
penicillamine, and oral gold, half the patients were either dead or disabled. 17
The idea that drugs induce remissions was described as "fallacious." The
unfortunate reality is that drug therapy often contributes to the suffering and
early death of the arthritis patient.

How can anyone argue that safe and potentially curative modalities such as
fasting and natural diet should not be tried first? In spite of numerous and
repeated proclamations by the American Arthritis Association and rheumatologists
to the contrary, rheumatoid arthritis is PREVENTABLE and REVERSIBLE. Fasting
and vegetarian diet have proven to be the only effective way to achieve
consistent remission in such patients.

The Arthritis Foundation boldly declares ion their literature that there is no
special diet for arthritis, and that food has nothing to do with causing it.
Fortunately, there is solid evidence to refute this ill-informed and
irresponsible opinion."

I'll see if I can get the rest of the chapter here soon.

Just another perspective.

When I read what's in the flu shot, I felt I shrunk in my chair. EEWWW
But since I am immune comprimised and have asthma, I'm at a higher risk of getting the flu which in turn can land me up in the hospital. It's difficult for me to fight off infections well and I heal slowly from wounds. So I have to make a decision of out weighing the good vs the bad of getting the shot. It's a tough call. But since I already took the flu shot, I don't have to think about it. I now have to worry about it.

You are right, there is no quick fix for this "epedemic" of horrible food.  Like you said, there is too much money in it, and people certainly are addicted to them.  I think we can treat ourselves once in a while, with no ill effects, but the problem is that these kinds of foods become the main source of nutrients, or more correctly, nutrient lacking food.  All we can do  is educate people.  However, a person today studying to become a medical doctor, i think has 4-5 hours worth of time dedicated to diet.   That is mind blowing to me, and just sad.   Then they are taught to keep a distance to the patient, to protect themselves.   The whole medical system is based upon fear, it is the most feared placed after prisons.  What kind of healing does that promote?

There was a group of people, completely separate from our modern society in the amazon (forgot the name).  Disease was pretty much unknown to them, until they built roads to their village.   Even the smallest influence from our society would cause illness.   Sad, but true.  There are so called blue zones, where they have mapped out "healthy" groups of people that live much longer, and  the findings are the same, they live healthy lives, eat good local produced food and get plenty of moderate exercise.   The medical system is fighting fires, but they are losing.   If they start studying health, and not disease, they would be doing a whole lot better.

The best way to get vitamin D, is 15 minutes of sun exposure every day (which is quite impossible some places) .....Take some good pure Omega 3.   I live in norway so we have lots of fish.  Lately theres a new product made from krill (from the deep waters of the north), which supposedly is the best kind, and most easily absorbed by the body.   I'm currently trying it myself....

If you want my advice on flu shots, stay far far away from them unless you are severely at risk.   Eat healthy instead, and take your supplement and plenty of good water, and probably most important, enough sleep.   Good hygene is important too, and be careful in places like public gyms, keep exercise moderate, not too intensive.

MORE on this chapter segment:

First there is the epidemiologic evidence. In populations that consume natural
diets of mostly unprocessed fruits, vegetables, and grains, autoimmune diseases
are almost nonexistent. Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis,
psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis are exceptionally rare in China, Indonesia,
and Africa, where the populations consume vegetarian or near-vegetarian diets.
18, 19

The same is found with lupus. Whereas African blacks rarely develop this
disease, it has a high prevalence in the United States, especially among black
women. 20

This cannot be because of heredity or racial differences. When people migrate
from China, Indonesia, Japan, and Africa to the United States and begin to
consume a rich western diet, arthritis and other autoimmune diseases become
common.

When these diseases do crop up in such populations, they are not severe. The
people generally have a milder form of the disease, without the joint
deformities and the significant reductioin of life span that we see in this
country. 21

So will placing people with rheumatoid arthritis on natrual-food, plant based
diets help our autoimmune-disease-ridden population? The results of studies
done on dairy-free, plant-based diets have been impressive. In a study at Wayne
University Medical School, fat-free diets were fed to volunteers, and resulted
in complete remission of arthritis in the majority of participants. All the
participants relapsed when either vegetable oils or animal food was reintroduced
into their diets. The investigators concluded thay the high-fat, high-protein
American diet causes rheumatoid arthritis. 22

Way to go girl!
I agree with almost everything you had to say..except about getting the "flu" shot lol.

Have never gotten the flu shot and am not starting now lol.

May I have your permission to copy and paste your experience on my autoimmune board?
I'm looking for people just like you to tell their stories.

I know the same things you know about food :-)  Lables are so deceiving and can't trust "all natural".  It's sad but atleast we're smarter than the average bear right?! :-)

I have had my vitamin D levels checked..they are good but thansk for the reminder!  IT is so important..one of the many things that gets over looked.

I had my second Cranial Sacral therapy today ( he moves all the bones in my head) and the emotional stuff that was released was just amazing.  Anyone else have that done?
I had one right after the accident for headaches about a year ago..this one was to "correct" the POSSIBLE kink in my pituitary stem...my alternative doctor Dr. Rose Fischer thinks that maybe it got shifted in the accident.

Nice to meet you Lori707!  I'm so happy to read your story and know that you are on the right track :-)

~Amy~
Oh and say no to the H1N1..personal opinion. ;-)

If you want to take the flu shot it is important to understand what is in it.  The ingredients are:

egg protein (hopefully they are tested so there are not pathogens in them)
Gelatin
Polysorbate 80(Tween80) (potential carcinogen)
Formaldehyde (known carcinogen)
Triton X100 (strong detergent)
Gentamycin (antibiotic)
Thimerosal (mercury) (linked to brain injury and autoimmune disease)

You ask your doctor about the ingredients but they do not want to scare you.  Saw a video of Dr. Oz and he is getting the flu shot because it is required of medical professionals. His wife and four children will NOT be getting the shot.

Evidence exist that the flu shot does not prevent the flu and these people can still get it.  A study done between 1970 and 1980 indicate that those getting five consecutive flu shots had a ten times higher rate of getting Alzheimer's disease.  At one time in my life before I got really sick I got the flu shot.  Sorry I did but will never get it again.  It is my understanding that if you eat healthy and keep your immune system strong your body will be able to fight off the flu.  I believe that because since me and my girl friend have been following a healthy life style we do not get sick anymore.  That is a year and a half without getting so much as a cold.  Don't take my word for it but google "flu shot" and search for the information.  Many of the items we use in everyday life have these toxins in them and we need to search them out.  You could be getting exposed to toxins and not even know it.

I was diagnosed with RA almost two years ago. I was in such terrible pain 24/7 and couldn't imagine living the rest of my life like that. My docs wanted to put me on all the toxic stuff and I declined. I didn't even take narcotic pain meds. May I add that I am 58yrs.old.

I did my own extensive research on the web. My docs knew I became a web person and they didn't like it. But I felt I had to be my own advocate for my body and self. I didn't like the manner in which the doctors would just throw a toxic perscription at me.

My search was on DIET & FOODS!!!  I totally changed my diet. I should say I changed my way of life. I cut out all refined foods, gluten free,no artificial perservatives or sweetners,no night shade foods such as potatoes, I don't eat any food that is inflammatory to the body such as red meats, corn and much more, I eat BROWN rice which is also made as noodles(I like pasta), etc.... I also take Vitamins and lots of omega 3's. The salmon I eat is Alantic fresh(NOT FARM), I eat as much organic foods as I can, etc.etc...

Well, I started feeling better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Today my pain level is just a bit annoying when I have it. I have no stiffness in my fingers and other joints. It just annoys me. I do have whole body parathesia(pins & needles) which I take Gabapentin(Neurontin) for it. I have taken and continue to take blood tests for sensitivities to certain foods. From time to time, I'll eat a small potatoe and will pay the price for it. I do eat yams and sweet potatoes which really aren't potatoes or night shade foods. I make CERTAIN that I eat 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries each day which are incredible antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Also strawberries and beans. I eat a hand full of walnuts each day!! It's hard to find walnuts that don't have other things in it but I was lucky to fine FARMSTAND California walnuts in a bag. There are many seasonings that are pro-inflammatory and others that are anti-inflammatory. It's so very important to READ LABELS on anything you pick up in the store. "Natural" does not mean organic and could have things in it that are no good! I also stopped completely eating dairy foods. I don't eat eggs. The cows and chickens eat grass that has pesticides in them, therefore getting into the milk that a person drinks and all the cheeses that are made from that milk. Also, the cows and chickens are shot up with steroids and antibiotics which a person also eats. They do sell organic chicken. I'm not sure it red meats come this way.

I read on the web that they did a couple trials of many RA people and put them on this type of diet. 89% of them felt better and many reduced their meds. I am on NO RA meds! I'm just on my meds for my neurological problems which may stem from my RA. I see my Rhuemy every month and take bloods tests. My RA Factor is still high and my Compliments 3&4 Total are a tad high. My ANA is getting up there but is not considered negative. I hope it stays that way. My CRP,SED RATE are a great level. Since RA is systemic my rhuemy and me watch out for any signs of inflammation in other parts of my body.

I just went to the dentist and had all my silver fillings removed and am having a good scaling of my gums to get out any bacteria. I also took my flu shot. I'm not sure if I'll take my H1N1 (Swine flu) shot or not. Could use some feed back on this one.

PLEASE GET A BLOOD TEST FOR VIT.D LEVEL !!!!!!!!
70% of Americans have low Vit.D according to what I have read. After 1/2 of a year after being sick, I finally had my Vit.D checked. It was 8.5 which is extremely low!!!!!!!! and dangerous!!  Low Vit.D can also cause autoimmune diseases. So PLEASE check with your doctors on this.

I'm not a doctor and I'm not telling anyone to not listen to their doctors or not take their meds. I'm just telling my own personal story. Last month's visit to my rhuemy I was given advice by my doc to continue the diet I am on.  :))

You can Google- anti-inflammatory diet foods, inflammatory foods, etc.

I too find myself going in and out of rage at the society we have created where ALL the options are not available BEFORE any treatment is offered.  We ( as a society) , in my opinion, have set it up this way.  Can we undo it?  I'm trying to, in my own small way by having my own board about autoimmune issues and posting ALL that I am finding, not just one side.  But is that enough?  What would be enough?

In reality I think the media could help a whole lot here but what is at stake? money and lots of it.  It is very sad and very frustrating that people's health in "general" comes down to a BOTTOM LINE and that bottom line as I see it MONEY in someones pocket.

Realistically if we closed down all the fast food chains in America ( just one example) what in reality would happen? two things off the top are a HUGE amount of people would  be out of work from the people who run the restaurants to the suppliers that supply those restaurants with their goods.  And second you have mental health break down...people not being allowed to supply their food addictions...seriously you would have chaos like no other. ( This is my 31st day without fast food or soda/caffeine) and I have seen first had just recently what kind of messed up thinking I was doing while on the food and now off the food how much more claer and SANE my thinking is...it would be scary to have millions of people NOT getting their addiction met all the same time.

So what is the answer?  The answer I have found is share with the people who want to hear what I've researched and what I am actually doing in my own life ( reason for my health blog)...start there and start small.  Education is key..one person at a time.

It is very clear that toxic drugs are not the answer long term...and I believe just about 100% of people ( even if they "believe" their condition to be irreversible, i know that's going to step on some toes) can correct an underlying issue as long as no surgey has been performed such as having your thyroid gland removed..using certain techniques to being the body back into balance.  Seriously how many people have tried the 10-20-30 DOCTOR SUPERVISED Fast?  giving the body a rest and giving the body time to heal without anything but water?  Dr. Fuhrman and Dr. Herbert Shelton are doctors who have done this with thousands of patients with all kinds of illnesses with 100% success rates.

In the end we DESERVE a choice..we deserve a chance to make our own decisions..but when only a fraction of the information is being given how can one really call that a choice???

Enjoy your day...make small changes and share your voice with others!

Every healing has a place, and ofcourse, if you have tried everything, you want to explore other choices.  If you're dying and the MD says, take this, you will live for now, you obviously take it.  It's your choice.  Many of us, that have "unusual" problems, have been through the hoops, and only get sicker, if not from the drugs, but from the horrible treatment from many health professionals.   Also, the fact that the entire medical community out there, denies all these alternative approaches, as snakeoil and just placebo.  But it seems those are the people who have great success stories, not those who followed orthodox approaches.
I've been taking and trying a lot of things myself, nothing has relieve my visual problems (yet) but my overall health has greatly improved through diet and being careful about what I expose my body to.   There was a time I would beg for steroids, but not get it.  Now, I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole, little less put them in my body, and now I'm being offered it.   I dont know if my condition is reversible (eye issues), but I'd rather have two organs fail, than all of them, down the road.

Health most certainly is a choice, wish I knew what I know now, 20 years ago.

Unfortunately some of us have things that are irreversable.  I have had all my root canals and amalgams removed and followed a detoxification program along with an excellent diet.  I started this program in April 2008.  All my dental work was completed November 2008.   Maybe 1 1/2 years and most of my bad sympthoms are gone so I consider myself lucky.  I still have a muscle spasm occuring on the left side of my face and was hoping it would go away.  This muscle spasm has been going on for over 20 years.  It may never go away but that doesn't mean I will give up trying.  Eating healthy could prevent you from getting other bad things and you just have to use a little effort to do it.  We all have to make choices as to how to address are problems and the only thing I can suggest is read as much as you can because it is your health.  Even when you read things they may not be true.  An example I am aware of is Tylenol.  The FDA has issued a warning that the current dose of Tylenol recommend is too high and could harm the liver.  They recommend lowering the dosage.  What about all the people who have harmed their liver thinking they were following the directions of taking tylenol.  When I look at something like this I ask myself what if they decide the level is still too high and they recommend lowering it again next year?  Is it better just to harm the liver a little bit?   Be very careful of what you read and understand that there could be a montary motive for the information given.  Ask yourself it it sounds logical.

The other problem is you have to be willing to make the change.  Making change is not easy.  But remember if you keep doing what you always did you will get what you always got.  I was at a point where I felt so bad I had thought death would be the best.  Now I do not care what anyone says being healthy is the only way I want to live.  Eating the junk food is not worth it to me.

On the other hand, I have done every natural remedy to take care of my pain and fatigue, including eliminating many things from my diet, and it's done little to help.

It's true that not everyone needs to be pumped full of drugs for every problem they have, but for those of us suffering, it is just stupid to limit our options. We should be aware of the choices, but keep in mind it is a choice - to use alternative medicine or Western medicine.

Better living through chemistry.

I'm so sick of the ignorance. I hope everyone can wake up one day, and realize the medical system is killing people, not curing.   I've never heard of anyone being cured of anything, with orthodox western medical toxic drugs.   Every case I have heard of healing, has been through either mental excerise or natural remedies (including food).
