Hello,
My husband got Guillian-Barre after having a respitory cold/bad strep throat in 2003. He knew something was wrong when his feet were tingling and he was extremely tired even when he should have been better, but did not know to go to a hospital until he could not walk anymore. His friend took him to the ER (we did not get married until 2005 and he was living in another state). After waiting for hours, the hospital finally started treating his symptoms after doing a spinal tap test (not sure the name), which they messed up by the way by digging in his spine for 30 minutes trying to hit the spot they were looking for and his back is still damaged to this day. As the GBS progressed, it got all the way up to his lungs and stopped just short of him having to have a breathing machine. Gradually as they treated him the GBS seemed to subside and he recovered his mobility. However, his treatment was cut short after only a week when the insurance said they would not pay any more. He never received the therapy that is standard I have heard after such cases.
Shortly after we were married in 2005, my husband began to have lots of immune problems. He was sick frequently and normal work days exhausted him. He would come home on his days off and sleep days at a time. We went to several doctors, from the ER when the symptoms were bad to trying different primary care physicians and others.
No one could tell us what was going on, despite his repeat bouts of strep throat and one of walking pnemonia. He did have his tonsils taken out for the strep, which has helped, but he still gets sick easily and tired all the time.
In 2006 he began to have severe joint, back, and muscle pains, as well as digestive issues. This has progressed to today where his pain is that of an old man with arthrtis. We tried going to a rhematologist who said he might have osteoarthritis but did not disable him or do anything, just said to take this drug and that drug. His pain is so bad today sometimes he can not get off of the couch, and sometimes cant move his fingers. We suspect it might be related to fibromyalgia that has developed, and he also has symptoms of gout.
The digestive issues, he can not eat anything without having diarrhea. We have seen a gastro for that and they found nothing after doing all of the tests.
We think that the GBS caused lasting damage to his nervous and immune system, as his symptoms, which run the gamut from digestive to pain to sickness to exhaustion, grow worse every day. He says it feels like his body is shutting down, and as I watch him he moves just like a 75 year old man. Yet after many tries and many many doctors, none address the GBS, autoimmune/neruological issues. If he goes in for the pain, they glance at the paperwork and give him some ibuprofin. They just don't seem to believe us because of his age, and also blame his weight, saying he needs to exercise, even though we tell them he has an active job, and whenever he tries to exercise the pain is so bad he can't move off of the couch. It is hard enough for him just to get through the work day and now we are at the point that I am trying to find a job because he may not be able to any more. He is not very overweight either, only 30 lbs. They keep saying that this weight causes his pain and that losing weight will fix his pain, but he went on a natural diet with supplements and lost a lot of weight (he was more overweight before). He was very healthy otherwise after the weight loss, but still the crippling pain with no improvement in mobility, and strange exhaustion (not mono, we tested for that, as well as thyroid and the standard tests..
Is there anyone out there who is familiar with the lasting effects of GBS and/or knows any doctors who would know more about this? My husband is wasting away in front of my eyes, not exaggerating, and no doctor will acknowledge him because he is so young I guess.
Thanks
