Not sure where to post this

What would cause elevated liver enzymes? Had blood work done last week (several times) and was admitted into the hospital for elevated liver enzymes. Had ultrasound over the weekend - liver looked ok. Then had HIDA scan on liver today - haven't got the results from scan yet.

My symptoms have been upper middle and then upper right abdominal pains. I wouldn't exactly call it abdominal pains because it feels more like it's the liver. For the past month my stomach has been constantly making sounds like it's digesting food whether I've eaten or not. I have no gallbladder - it was removed 2 years ago.

I am not a drinker and have no family history of liver disease. I also don't take any Tylenol, Motrin, etc.

I don't exactly know what was elevated - all I remember is seeing two which were elevated, but there were actually three elevated liver enzymes. I DO remember the two numbers on only two of them (not making sense here, sorry). One was 756 and the other was 588. I would say those two numbers is off the charts! What would cause this? and anyone else here with the same problem? I need someone to talk to about this - it's really scaring me.

I don't believe the blood work sheet I have right now is checking for Ferritin levels - it figures.

Does Hemochromitosis mean excess iron?

Get your Ferritin levels checked and ask them to check you for hemochromitosis.rose227

Thanks for replying!

I will have to get a copy of the results and post them. I am thinking two of the tests were ALT and AST - these were the ones that were 756 and 588. When the doctor only gave me a glimpse of the numbers it freaked me out. I remember holding my hand over my mouth and then laying back down on the bed. My doctor could tell I wanted to cry and told me to try not to worry and then he said he'll get to the bottom of this.

I don't know, but right now I am still in a lot of pain.

Hi, At first I thought it maybe your gallblader. Sometimes stones can lodge in the bile ducts, but since that is gone we don't have to worry about that. It still could be medications that are causing the high enzymes. Nexium is one that will drive those numbers up. Many other meds can too...too many to list! The numbers you posted would not be for your enzymes. 40 would be high for them. I can't imagine liver enzymes that high! You are in good hands, I would wait to see what your doctor comes up with. More than likely it can be reversed. If you will keep us posted, I'm curious as to what it is. I have had liver problems in the past, mine was from Tylenol. Thanks
