Optical Nerve Question

Hello all,

I've recently been experiencing a round of unusual symptoms that seem to be in the auto immune disorder/MS family - muscle tingling, spasms, joint pain, back pain, etc. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia more than 10 years ago but have not felt anything like this. Last night I woke up with my eye twitching rapidly and double vision for a brief moment. My PCP is running tests, I have a neuro appointment, I have an MRI scheduled for Friday, and she had me see an eye doctor today. The doctor commented that my optic nerve was large and that she wanted me to ask family members if they had glaucoma. Since I've been obsessively searching online about my symptoms, I'm aware that an inflammed optic nerve and blurred vision are signs of MS and diseases that mimic it.

My question is this - could a 'large optic nerve' be mistaken for an inflammed optic nerve? Or would the doctor be able to clearly tell inflammation from it just being large? She did say her concern was that this was an early sign of glaucoma and it could just as easily be something normal for me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the response - it was very helpful. I followed up with my eye doc and she said my eyes are fine for now but she wants to watch for glaucoma in the future.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I just read more about Behcet's disease and I hope you're getting the care and support you need.

Hi-

Several years ago I was diagnosed with a large optic nerve. Nothing came of it- I went to an opthamologist (sp) and they did all kinds of testing and they said everything looked good- my regular eye Dr. was worried I might have glaucoma too.

Now since then things have changed for me- I was just diagnosed with Behcet's disease a few weeks ago and it can cause all kinds of problems and per my rhuematologist I am to see an opthamologist (sp) again and have testing done to see how my eyes look. I am also to see a cardiologist too

I hope this helps
