Sed Rate changes and ANA

for the past two years, I've been tested for Lupus, MS, autoimmune, etc...my blood tests that I've had have been

Sed Rates starting at 43 going to 50 then 74, now down to 32...

my ANA has been positive at 1:160 now at 1:80, what explains the changes in the Sed Rate and ana?
my symptoms are balance issues, vertigo, joint pain, blurry/double vision, dry eyes, cold hands and feet, tingling and numbness. sore muscles and calf in legs. etc etc

thanks for any answers

I would consider asking your physician about lyme disease and/or CFIDS.

Good luck !

I am in the same boat as you.  The docs are now thinking I have mixed connective tissue disease (combination of lupus, schleroderma and a third i can't remember).  Anyways, I have had the joint pain and fatigue for 15 years now, started when I was 18 years old.  Then in last several years I have gotten muscle pain as well and other health problems.  I also have raynauds syndrome (when your hands and feet get cold and turn either blue or white).  Rhumatoid arthritis was ruled out for me, so was lyme disease.  They thought it was lupus about 8 years ago, and then several years ago they thought it was fibromyalgia because I was like one symptom short of lupus, though had all the main symptoms of it.

I have a positive ANA (most recently it was 1:80, but in the past it has been 1:160 and 1:320).  A very high SED rate, fluctuating between 35 and 60 over the years.  And now they think I have problems with my lungs, since autoimmune diseases seem to deposit something there if you are inflamed, which I didn't quite grasp what the docs were saying.  The docs also want to make sure I don't have any heart involvement going on at this point.  I'm only 34 years old, and I feel like I should be 90 or something.  Plus I'm a mom to a 2 year old.  Anyways, it's frustrating to anyone who has autoimmune problems, especially when the docs keep changing what you have!  The docs said this time I definitely have an autoimmune disease, it's not fibromyalgia, since there are a lot of other things going on besides joint and muscle pain.  *sigh*  Fibromyalgia ain't that great of a diagnosis either, but well, you just gotta make lemonade out of the lemons in life... or make some sangria with them.  :)

Your symptoms sounds exactly like mine, except that I so not have the dry eyes. I have been told I have either Scleroderma (www.sleroderma.org) or Lupus (www.lupus.org). The dryness you are experiencing may be related to Sjogern's Syndrome (www.sjogrens.org). It is very possible to have overlaps of several diseases, especially with more than one ANA pattern. Here is a good link to look at for ANA patterns: http://dpalm.med.uth.tmc.edu/clinicalservices/Interps/ANA.html

Take a look and then ask your doctor to run the labs associated with each of the patterns you possess. These tests are blood tests and are run by a lab, so this should be a no-brainier, even for a doctor who is totally overwhelmed with what you may have. In the meantime, call your local or state chapters that deal with the diseases that can be associated with your ANA patterns and get the names of PROVEN doctors and specialists that are in your area. One of the main problems and frustrations of people that I have been seeing time and time again is that the doctors they are going to see have no idea how to really treat them. This is a waste of your time and money! Be proactive and aggressive!

Blessings,

Hope

I have a son who is seven. His joint problems started when he was five, he got real sick and couldnt even stand on his legs. He has been through every test in the book and they cant come up with a diagnosis. More recently he started having a skin rash at night. The doctors did an ANA and a Sed Rate. I got a call yesterday that his ANA has gone up since his last test. We have seen Rhuem and had the test done which was neg and Rhuem says there is nothing they can do since they dont know what it is. Sometimes I feel like they think I am making things up so I have started taking pics and now with the elevated ANA and elevated Sed Rate we are off to more specialist. Any have any ideas that I can mention to the docs. He has fatigue (good and bad days) but he tires easily and is usually pretty tired, he has joint pain (alot of times when he is sick), headaches, and is always complaining of his eyes bothering him. Thanks for any ideas, I just feel so bad for him.

Hi there,

Just read your post and thought I would throw in what I know.  Has anyone tested you for the HLA B27 gene.   I was a triathlete/marathon runner until 4 years ago.  I woke up one day and couldn't walk or move.  Long story short, my sed rate was 110 and I tested positive for having the HLA B27 gene.  2 weeks prior to this I had my first UTI ( I was 46).  I was dx with Reactive Arthritis.  Just something to think about, I wish you well.

We are going to Shriners to see a speciality doctor. We had actually gone to San Francisco a while back and they released his care cause they couldnt figure out what was wrong with him. All the Rheum tests were negative. Well the pediatrician thinks action needs to be taken since the levels are changing so there is obviously something going on. I am really hoping that this new doctor can give us some answers but I am scared at the same time that they still wont find anything and we will be back to square one. My poor child has been through so much. I am not sure what his ANA is but I will definately find out. The only thing the doctor said was that his Sed Rate was moderatly high and his ANA had gone up since the last one they did. I will definately get the vision checked thanks for letting me know about that. Its nice to have found somewhere I can tell this stuff to people that understand what I am going through. Thanks for any help.

Have you had him checked for Juvenile Dermatomyositis?  I am currently researching this disease as an adult as it seams to fit all my symptoms and nothing else is showing up so far.  Here is a website for you to see if his sx fit:

http://www.myositis.org/template/page.cfm?id=184

I have also read that it is related to vascular issues and therefore can cause vision problems associated w/ vasculitis.

Good luck and I hope you can find some answers soon!  I will be praying for your family!
