Plaquenil has been used for years for many diseases but first started out as an anti-malarial drug.  Now it is used mostly for RA/PA and lupus, however as stated, it does have side effects so you need to be monitored by your doctor, an eye doctor annually, labs every 4 - 6 weeks, etc.  It takes several months to see the peak effects for this medical to work.  Here is more info. on the medication:  http://www.drugs.com/pro/plaquenil.html . If you have questions, talk to your Rheum, and if you have side effects let him/her know immediately as well as your Pharmacist.

MarinaSam, welcome to the forum.

There are no 2 patients exactly the same and you may get some people
who had nothing but problems when taking Plaquenil Sulfate and others with great results.

Going by the experience of a limited number of people who are/have taken it, won't be of much help.

There are just too many variable factors,so it becomes an individual trial
at the end.

You own doctor has no clue about its effectiveness ( keep in mind that all drugs only have to prove effectiveness higher than the placebo effect and relative safety) and cannot predict any possible side effects either.

I believe you need to stick with taking the drug for a few weeks, before any initial adverse effects are worked out. and then later you can draw your own conclusions.

There are numerous possible side effects and should check online and also consult with your prescribing doctor.

One more thing to get checked is any adverse drug interaction, if currently on other meds.

Hope this helps.
Niko
