What is going on with my labs?

I have Hashimotos (hypothyroidism) since I was 29 or 30. I'm 52 now.  I've been on levothyroxine for years.  My doctor had me up to 375 mcg. of levo.  I got a TSH test on 2/4/14.  My TSH was 0.11.  I got another TSH on 3/10/14.  It showed TSH of 0.07.  I got dropped from 375 mcg. to 350 mcg.  Then 300 mcg.  Now my doctor wants to drop me down to 200 mcg.  I'm very concerned I'm going to crash.  I know technically if the TSH is low, the thyroid meds should be lowered.  I was doing ok on 375 mcg.  I'm seeing a weight loss doctor and I'm on phentermine and topiramate.  I've lost 20 pounds.

My concern is, what is causing my TSH to crash low?  Is this normal to bring someone down from 375 mcg. down to 200 mcg. in such a short time?  My doctor doesn't care how I feel and he doesn't believe in Armour or Cytomel or any other thyroid med.  I already have a hard enough time with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis and depression (among other things).  I'm in chronic pain.  I'm already in a fog mentally.

Anyone know of a good doctor/endo around my area? I'm in 56571 zip code.  Most of my docs are in Fargo, ND.  Thank you!

Topiramate helps with weight loss? Awesome!

What are you taking for your RA? When is the last time you have had labs for your rheumatological disorder?

Yes if your thyroid count is low then your medication dosage is usually dropped. Its dangerous to by hyperthyroid.

Hi jthoen.

You may have been "mistreated" all along.
Your TSH is not necessarily indicative of your CELLULAR thyroid function.
The other conditions you mentioned, could be just consequences of an under-treated low thyroid function.

TSH to crash low could be probably explained by pituitary causes.

Endocrinologists are a funny breed, it seems, where most of them adhere
to the prescribed protocols, leaving many patients like you in limbo.

It might be wise to look into finding a  Naturopathic doctor  and have
Free T3, Free T4 and Reverse T3  levels tested for accurate thyroid function, along with pituitary function test.
Also, I would get an adrenal stress profile, if I were you, as it seems to be consistent your overall health situation . Chronic stress is a concern.

Another suggestion is to go low carb , gluten and dairy-free for a few weeks,
as a test. If you experience a dramatic improvement, you can be certain that you may have an intolerance to these.
Most hypothyroid sufferers have gluten intolerance and don't even know it!
The gluten molecules-mainly from gmo grains- resemble the TPO(Thyroid Peroxidase - an enzyme necessary for the signalling Thyroid hormone production) molecules and thus the immune system in its response against gluten, attacks the TPO in the Thyroid also!

If you need any more details, please do not hesitate to let know by either posting again or by messaging me directly.

I hope this helps, but please note that my comments and suggestions,
do not constitute medical advice.

Take care.
